INTRODUCTION

Cytopathology has been the backbone of the institute, ever since its inception as the Cytology Research Centre (CRC) in 1979. The major focus of the Division is to provide comprehensive cancer screening and diagnostic services, especially cervical cancer screening using cytology, fine needle aspiration cytology and histopathology. In addition, translational research in major cancers like breast, cervix and oral cavity is undertaken in conjunction with the clinical and molecular divisions. Various cost-effective strategies have been devised to augment cancer screening services. The Division also undertakes validation of low-cost devices/ technologies for cervical cancer screening. Hands-on and online training workshops/ courses for pathologists from across the country are conducted to build capacity in the field of cervical cancer screening. The Division has been accreditated by the Indian Academy of Cytologists for short-term fellowships in Cytopathology for pathologists
